Googlicious

December 16, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

That’s right kids, I said it…googlicious.  Let it roll off the tip of your tongue like a sweet melon.  Google is kind of like your grandfather, knows absolutely everything about absolutely everything.  It even finds ways to draw parallels between things that seem to have nothing in common.   Google maps is more than awesome though since it has captured such things as Lou Pinella out and about on a Chicago street.  But the best thing about google is trying to come up with really, really, really, really obscure words or phrases and seeing what pops up.  I mean it is entertainment for an entire weekend when mixed with youtube (see previous postings).  My one question is why does google still have googlevideo?  Google bought youtube.  Do they really get that many hits from googlevideo?  If so, who uses that over youtube?  Google that question readers….

Ah, wiki wiki wiki

December 8, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

I am of mixed feelings regarding wiki.  I do not like wikipedia a whole lot as they edit what you post.  For example, if you were to post a rambling biography of your life, wikipedia editors would swiftly swoop in with their talons and delete your post.  I do love the first amendment and see no reason why they should edit anything that is posted. Who cares if it is non-sequiter or offensive or racist or sexist or elitist or minimalist?  Freedom of speech.  Other than that, wikis are very cool to use when posting a blog pertaining to a particular interest.  For example, allow people to post edits on articles regarding home repair or technology.  That I find to be extremely helpful.  But as I said, I am not a huge,  100% fan of wikipedia.

Instantly Message Another Distant Human

December 8, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

I used the instant message live chat on Askaway, but was not thrilled.  I feel like a phone call would have been much easier and quicker.  I guess I feel that instant messaging is much better for short conversations that are not super important.  That way, each participating person can type and send their own message as they see fit.  No pressure to respond in an orderly fashion or anything

Podcasts…more like podlames!

November 17, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

As if people were not bored enough having to listen people talk about absolutely nothing everyday in person, someone invented a way for people to be bored 24/7 around the globe by the same person.  How you ask?  Podcasts.  While some are very interesting in a, “oh that is neat” kind of way, most are rather dull and make me wonder not only who would make such a thing, but who would listen to it.  I certainly do not mean to insult people who actually enjoy them, but I am still a big fan of face time.  And not face time via a webcam or other recording device.  Walk around. Say hello to people in the streets or at your local pub.  FACE TIME IS WHERE IT IS AT!  That being said, I really did enjoy the Writer’s Almanac.  Could have down with less poetry and more neat annecdotes from history, but take what you can get!  Good night and good luck.

A New Song

November 17, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

Old Wilmette Library had a database. E-I-E-I-O.  And on that database there was some info.  Here some info, there some info, everywhere some info.

That is what popped into my head when I began to play with the multitude of databases via the internet (which I learned from one database was invented by Al Gore).  I was somewhat shocked, in a good way, at how many databases and of such a variety that Wilmette patrons had access to.  I am not sure which is my favorite, but it is probably the historical ones.  I would rank the Chicago Tribune Historical database as an eleven out of ten.  However, do not be dismayed if you search for such historically important days like my birthday and do not find it reported.  Certainly do not stop using the database for such an offense.  I am told my people are working on it and will remedy the situation.  Okay kids, it is time to post this sucker so all my loyal readers who have been sad that I haven’t posted in a while can read this blog!

The Original Olympic Game of Soccer

I am a monster fan of youtube.  It is amazing how many funny videos you can find.  I could spend countless hours watching various people doing various things. I would love to find a way for me to just watch youtube while I am at work.  Oh, the deliciousness that would have been.

Feathered & Lethal

October 21, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

  Hello my loyal blog readers,

Today I would like to discuss the lethality of my amazing hair.  In this day and age, a truly feathered and lethal hairdo is just not seen.  And it is a true shame.  As anyone who has seen my hair can attest, a feathered and lethal hairdo does more than make me look professional, it allows me to have an instant alluring look for all occassions.  I personally prefer to have just a smidgen hint of grey so I actually pay good money to have it professionally dyed.  I just want to make sure all out there appreciate a truly feathered and lethal hairdo.  Thanks.

Scotland …..as it is …..!

This is my homeland. I love my homeland. I dream of the days when as a boy I would roam the wild backcountry of my homeland. Oh, who am I kidding? I am a city kid. Thank God I am a city boy. Take that American country music. I am personally not a fan of flickr or any other on-line photo sharing website. It is way to easy to steal personal photos from “locked” and “secure” websites. Also, once it is on the internet, it is always available and there is no real way to contain it. But, who knows? Maybe I am old fashioned…

Blogosphere?

October 10, 2008 by scottishlibrarian

Blog, blog, blog.  Is that the internet equivalent of blah, blah, blah?  In this day and age people are almost always talking via the internet and rarely face to face it seems.  Whatever happened to the good ol’ days of sitting on your front porch and watching the neighborhood kids run all over the place while you sip a cold beer and chat with the neighbors?  Granted I am not even close to that generation as I belong to the generation of blog, blog, bloggers, but still?  I guess I am old fashioned, but I prefer to think that I have that elderly Scottish gentleman chivalrous air about me.  I could see myself sitting in a pub back home, telling tales to all the youngin’s about the Scotland of yesteryear.  Who knows?  Perhaps one day in the future, I may find myself doing just that.
